Before I started my bachelor’s degree in Korea, I did not know that I am going to have an interest in China and Chinese culture. The more I study Chinese, the more interest I have. During my third year of college, I had gotten involved in an exchange program in Hefei, China. I found it was a great opportunity to learn more about Chinese cultures and their people. Furthermore, while studying abroad, I have demonstrated strong leadership and management skills through being president of my class. Through this experience I was able to enhance my ability to communicate with many people from various countries. In addition, I was also able to exchange cultural ideas between many foreign friends. Those experiences are where I gained an interest in cultural exchange and cultural industry. Those experiences made me decide to come to China again and pursue my master’s degree.
I worked at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games as a United Arab Emirates’s NOC (National Olympic Committee) assistant. I also worked at the 2014 Incheon Paralympic Games as a China’s NOC assistant. In 2015 in Gwangju, Korea held a 2015 Summer Universiade, where I worked as a Mauritius NOC assistant. At those few games, I worked as an Interpreter for athletes, officials and Cdm (Chef de Mission) in English, Chinese, and French. Through those experiences, I realized that the influence of culture and arts management was more powerful than I thought. Since then, I have taken into consideration the impact of the soft power. This is easily observable when looking at the unification of China, despite the numerous cultures and ethnic groups that reside within the nation. Thus, I believe that in the near future, China will create harmony in the arts and cultural industry, working alongside other countries to create a new paradigm in the arts and cultural industry.
At Peking University, I am gaining more insight on the skills needed in arts and cultural management. Being involved in a stimulating and interactive research group I am gaining vast knowledge and have been able to experience various forums and meetings about arts and cultural management. Moreover, through reading Korean, Chinese, and English papers I am getting accustomed to cross cultural thinking and understand current situation in the arts and cultural industries of the world. Last year, I joined the Culture and Sports department of Peking University. This department manages all activities that are related to sports and culture. It is a great honor being involved and participating in various activities with this group. For example, I was given the opportunity to work as a volunteer in a multitude of plays, performances, and sport matches. Through this club, I understood how activities are prepared, managed, and worked. Through my education at Peking University, I have found that management is nearly identical in every group and country. Peking University Influences my life in many aspects, each and every day. I hope to continue to gain the knowledge and skills required to work in the arts and cultural management industry.
