The National Social Science Foundation Significant Arts Research Project: Research on the Policy and Strategy of International Communication of Chinese Culture and Arts was launched in October, 2014 at Peking University. The Principle Investigator Prof. LIN Yi and the supervisors of the sub-project teams of this major project are well-known experts and scholars from related disciplines and fields, and each of them has made abundant achievements in both theoretical and practical studies. Research members of this project are all acquainted with fundamental theories and have experienced in experimental researches that led to fruitful results. The project team cooperates with the School of Arts, Peking University; Institute for Cultural Industries; Peking University and Research Centre for Aesthetics and Aesthetic Education, Peking University, such cooperation guarantees the project will gain strong support in authentic academic resources. The project is set under a cross-disciplinary theoretical structure of cultural policies and management, arts producing and communication, and intercultural communication and management, with a goal to solve problems in both macro and micro perspectives of policies and strategies of international communication of Chinese culture and arts through researches on five sub-projects that focusing respectively on organizational structures of international communication of Chinese culture and arts; classical Chinese culture and arts; consumer and market development; expressions of creation and communication of arts; and strategies on arts management education.
Research on China-featured Cultural Diplomacy
Against the background of the globalization of economy and culture, cultural diplomacy becomes significant in the progress of enhancing national soft power. Cultural diplomacy is concerned as an essential form of diplomacy besides the traditional forms of economical diplomacy, political diplomacy and military diplomacy. Cultural diplomacy is featured with advantages such as sustainability and reciprocity, and is able to affect and change one’s inherent values at the same time shape and spread one’s international images through exerting subtle influences. In the recent years, China concerns more and more about the employment of intercultural communication and intercultural trades in establishing the image of a great power, however, there are still unsolved problems within the competition among soft powers of great world nations. Strategies, forms, and approaches of intercultural communication are still in need of further improvement. The aim of this project is to research and summarize on crucial issues and bottleneck obstacle, and to provide theoretical support for establishing cultural diplomatic strategies which serves the top policies with Chinese characteristics and innovative thoughts.
Sino-UK Performing Arts Skills Exchange Symposium
Based on the existed collaborations between Chinese and British theatres, this symposium invites experts and senior managers in this field to communicate and discuss the real issues such as operating models for theatres, standards for stage management, methods to appeal to audiences, financing models, international cooperation plans and much more. The symposium not only looks into the differences in two countries, but also tries to find solutions to dealing with the differences, and thus proposes the trends of future collaboration. The symposium is not only practical but also with academic meanings. It aims at helping Chinese cultural managers to gain the successful experience of British theatres in management and operation, so as to lay a solid foundation for the future international development of Chinese theatres, and create an enabling environment for the collaboration between two countries in arts sector.
Seminar of Chinese-French Cultural Management Professionals
Directors and presidents of famous arts festivals, arts centers and theatres from France, and representatives of cultural organizations from China were participated in this seminar and discussed profoundly on themes related to Chinese and French theaters and theater management. The seminar provided valuable information of the Western European perspective on cultural management and model for the Chinese theater and troupe professionals to improve their abilities of theater and troupe management. The seminar focused on both practicality and professionalism, presenters were all with rich practical experience and international visions in theater management and operation. The successful experiences of the French art troupes and theatres can be used as reference for the Chinese art troupes and theatres in developing an effective integration of both countries’ cultural management concepts, and encouraging innovations that support the development of culture national wide.
