I’m undertaking my doctoral program in Arts Management and Cultural Industry at Peking University.

There are several areas of research that I’m working on with particular interest, including management of the cultural industry sector, marketing of arts organizations, and the investment and financing of small and medium-sized cultural enterprises.

NCRICA provides a platform to develop my practical abilities. Through these intercultural communication activities, I have had opportunities to talk with arts managers from China and overseas, obtaining the latest information. Consequently I have realized the importance of fieldwork in undertaking academic research. I participated in the Sino-UK Performing Arts Skills Exchange Symposium, and most of the issues were about the dilemmas they have met. I discovered a great deal about which fields the arts managers have key concerns about, what problems they want to solve and what their expectations are for the future. I think these questions are exactly what researchers should focus on. Professors here consistently emphasize the pivotal role of fieldwork in academic research, and they hope to change the stereotyped image in our minds. This high-level symposium fully explained their viewpoint. It also reminded me to pay more attention to collecting first-hand data, ensure the latest news regarding arts management is kept up to date, thus make my research effective and objective.

The Sino-UK Performing Arts Skills Exchange Symposium closed successful. As a member of staff, I feel proud of our team. Everyone was clear about their respective responsibilities and we collaborated closely. In the 2017, the 14th International Conference on Arts and Cultural Management will be hosted by Peking University in Beijing and this presents a big challenge to our team. The symposium provided a “rehearsal”, where we gained lots of experience in creating an agenda, organizing a schedule and other preparation. We divided all the staff into four groups, and my group was responsible for arranging meals, hotels and transport. As we discussed any possible situations in advance, every item on the schedule was under control. I found out that it is really necessary to make a detailed plan when you are dealing with a huge project.

Working at NCRICA is always a challenge but it rewards me a lot as well. I look forward to the establishment of the laboratory as well as the database, and to inspiration from each intercultural communication activity.
